Tea and Snacks

How can one forget afternoon tea and the snacks? It used to be tea, coffee or hot chocolate, in rotation. Snacks were also varied but what stands out in memory is chocolate, not the traditional one, but brittle, soft and light chocolate colour. As soon as tea arrived, our civil helpers would yell, “chaaya, chaaya, coffee”, and we would run wherever we stood or lay at that moment.

To get to the tea pot and the snacks was a challenge always. If you were slow in running, you would miss the bus because many of us were used to taking two, three or even more cups of the ‘valued beverage’ and hardly cared if others were left out. Snacks were a bigger and a more lucrative target.

“A cup of tea would restore my normality.”

Douglas Adams
