Officer Like Qualities (OLQ)
Whoever devised training of defence forces, did a good job. All things were good except for the OLQ. This was the most dangerous of all. All those GCs who were ambitious and aimed to pass out from the School in a respectable Order of Merit, vied for attention of Directing Staff and showed their initiative, intelligence and cooperation with comrades at the time they were watched by DS. These acts earned them additional marks in the name of OLQ by the DS in their internal assessment. Good OLQ marks pushed up the grade of a GC dramatically.
"An officer’s job is to sign everything, take the blame, and quite simply to walk ahead and get shot first."
Evelyn Waugh in “Men at Arms”
